Mel Jones and His Bag O’ Bones
Bones to Pick CDEd Bumgardner
Mel Jones began his musical career years ago as a drummer and singer, but for the past 15 years he has learned to wail on harmonica and has studied all manner of American roots music. Along the way, he slowly worked his way toward a band that would be fun – and talented. That band is Mel Jones and His Bag O’ Bones, located in Mocksville but drawing from centuries of American music.

The bands rollicking debut Bones to Pick mixes Jones’ generally wonderful originals - “Plumbing Blues” is a hoot - with such evergreens as “Hey Good Lookin’” and “Got My Mojo Workin’,’” all of which find an unexpected fresh spark in the hands of Jones and band. The musicians pick up a storm, but they never let a good lick get in the way of better times. The Bones are part minstrel show, part jug band, part country blues mavens, with enough old-time mountain music to solidify the band’s local roots.
Just listen to Jones sing “Sheik of Araby” – you can practically hear the snaps and pops of a 78 rpm record - and try not to smile.
