Bones Blues @ The Brock

BC Brock Performing Arts Center
Bricolage Arts Festival

Saturday, November 3rd; 7pm

My darling daughter Regan and myself attended a meeting of arts folks a couple of years ago in Greensboro at the end of which a lovely lady named Anne Willson stood up and passionately announced her intentions to stage a regional festival involving and encouraging artists of varying genres and disciplines to collaborate and create new works that would be displayed and performed across a twelve county swath of the Piedmont in a variety of venues. This incredibly daring venture would encourage artists, patrons, and especially appreciators to open their minds to new and different art possibilities and generally bring folks together in a new way. Projects would be submitted and selected and grants would be granted based on originality and diversity in subject. Artistic collaboration from different counties would be given priorities. As I listened, I marveled at the foresight and uniqueness of her ideas but pretty much forgot about it until Elizabeth Carlson of Carolina Musicways told jazz trumpet guru Joe Robinson and I that we would make excellent candidates for a grant. One thing led to another and lo and behold; before I couldn't even spell Bricolage, now I are one. Joe and myself will roll out our little project Piedmont Strut that careens down the very crooked musical path from blues to jazz. Of course our path will lead right through our beloved Piedmont and will star members of Mel Jones and His Bag O' Bones, Wicker and Jones, the Joe Robinson Quartet, and the Revelators. It is our great privilege to participate in this event with dancers, visual artists, writers, film makers, and all those that make up the wonderful artistic stew that simmers around the Piedmont Triad region. We had a hell of a lot of fun putting this show together and if you will venture out of your cave for one night I'll bet you'll enjoy it too. But don't limit yourself to our show when there is so much to choose from. The facts you need are at www.bricolageartsfestival.org &

Bones Blues @ The Brock

Bag O' Bones at Perry's

Why does everybody love the Blues? I’ll tell you why. Cause no matter if you’re old or young, rich or poor, no matter where you’re from, no matter who your daddy is, no matter what you eat for breakfast, no matter what your real hair color is, some where, some how, sometime you’re gonna get the Blues. That’s why the Blues has been the most influential form of music in the world touching jazz, country, rock and roll, Gospel, bluegrass, old time, R&B, reggae...and on and on.

But more than any other genre the Blues is a living and breathing thing surviving through the years by changing and evolving. Mel Jones and His Bag O’Bones take acoustic Blues down the road to the next fork by doing the same thing that the old country blues masters did. They listened to the music around them, paid attention to the world around them, and lived their lives. From these sources they made the Blues well up in a musical spring that became a branch that became a creek that became a river that has now become a flood. The Bones are proud to add a few drops of their own.
